Small, independently run shops were once a mainstay of every town in Wales, yet today, they are an almost forgotten sight. Defined by the values of the lower-middle class that emphasised decency, honesty, lip-service to Christianity, loyalty to King and Country, independence, and getting on through hard work, it was in many ways a secure world for a child to grow up within. In Tales of the Shopocracy John Barnie looks back at his experience of this world, his father having kept a sweet and ice cream shop in Abergavenny for over forty years. It also plots his eventual rebellion against some of these middle-class values, and the sense of divided loyalties that this brought in its wake.
